Payton Marshall is the weekend morning anchor at WXIX in Cincinnati, where her investigative reporting and storytelling skills have earned her multiple accolades. Marshall’s deep-rooted connection to law enforcement, being raised by her father, a Sergeant at the West Chester Police Department, and her grandfather, a former Chief-of-Police at the Woodlawn Police Department, profoundly influences her approach to journalism. This background has fueled her passion for empathetic storytelling and driven her to focus on critical issues, such as accessibility to mental health resources for first responders.
At WXIX, Payton has spearheaded numerous promotional and investigative stories for special projects, earning her eight first-place awards at the 2024 All Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards and two first-place awards at the 2024 Ohio SPJ Awards. Her work spans a wide range of categories, including Race and Diversity, General News, Education, Science and Technology. Notable among her investigative reports is her examination of new hospital technology aimed at providing crucial evidence in assault and abuse cases, particularly for people of color. She also uncovered the misuse of over $120,000 in taxpayer funds for repairing jail windows broken by inmates.
In 2023, Payton received awards for her in-depth coverage of the devastating tornadoes that impacted Goshen, as well as her sports reporting on the Cincinnati Bengals—a testament to her genuine enthusiasm for sports. Although she is not a sports reporter, her love for sports traces back to her own experiences as a cheerleader in grade school, high school and college, where she cheered at Wittenberg University.
Payton's educational journey began with a year at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles before she transferred to Wittenberg University. She graduated cum laude in 2017 with a B.A. in Theatre and Dance, followed by a magna cum laude graduation from the University of Cincinnati in 2019 with a B.A. in Journalism and Digital Broadcast News. Her career took off as a reporter and fill-in anchor at FOX 45/ABC 22 in Dayton, Ohio, before she made her mark at WXIX.
A passionate storyteller and dedicated journalist, Payton Marshall continues to bring compelling, award-winning journalism to the tri-state area and beyond.
